Before class, we were asked to write down in 2 sentences max. what you think an interface is. Here is my answer:

An interface is a connection between two systems, subjects, organisations, etc. Through interfaces, communication takes place.

We also made a little start on the '100 interfaces' assignment. This is the link to our collection.

With Gabrielle we had some feedback on the interfaces we had so far. The feedback was good and I have the feeling that we are on the right path.

With Brigit, we learnt how to manipulate your desktop and find out other things in the coding of your own laptop.
The User Interface
For this class we had to come up with a persona and write it down. With Arjen we would then discuss the things we discovered and made.

My persona is based on Airline Employment. Here are my notes and my final persona.
Before Arjen's class, we had to make a flowchart of an interface that would be useful for the persona you wrote for last weeks lesson.

Since my persona is a stewardess, but is now scared to fly with all the COVID-19 circumstances, I want to design an interface that would make working less dangerous for her and her colleagues.
In the airplane, the stewardesses and stewards normally walk in-between the chairs to serve food and drinks to the passengers. Nowadays that is not possible anymore with the 1,5 meter rule. But still, the passengers need food and drinks, especially when on a longer flight. Currently, the passengers grab the food and drinks on beforehand when entering the plane. When you have to fly for a longer period of time, for example 12 hours, you also get a warm meal. With the current procedure of grabbing food on beforehand, that is not really possible.
With the interface I came up with, the idea is to make a trolley that can be directed with a remote by the airline employment.

With Brigit we talked about the history of the internet. She showed some videos and explained them a little bit.

After that we got the assignment that is shown here on the right. I did this assignment together with Sofia, since we were allowed to work in pairs.
For Arjen's class, we had to try out our UX design. Since my idea was a bit to hard to try out at home, I made an UX design that is a bit randomly put together but it was definitely fun to do!
System Interface User
User(s): anyone in school who wants to go to a certain place within the school.
Intention(s): making the 1,5 meter distancing a bit more fun so people will adapt to it easier and follow the rules more willingly.
Material(s): Stickers for on the ground.
User(s): mostly students will use the machines in school, but sometimes teachers have to use the machines as well to maybe explain something or if they need anything.
Intention(s): make not only yourself aware, but also let the people around you make you aware. When someone crosses the 1,5 meter distance, the whole room will see/hear it.
Material(s): motion sensor, speaker, light(?)
User(s):anyone in school who wants to go to a certain place within the school.
Intention(s): make sure that people will not pass each other to keep the 1,5 meter distance.
Material(s): using posters to inform people and maybe also show it on the ground itself.

For the interface, I was inspired by the medical industry. Before the nurses can go into the incubator, they need to wash their hands for 30 seconds. When the light turns green, they can go in and everyone in de room can see that the nurse has washed hands before entering. If it is red and people see the nurse going in anyways, they can say that to the nurse who is working in the incubator. With this system, nurses are more aware of washing their hands for 30 seconds.

My idea is to make a signal with a motion sensor in it that can see when 2 or more people are in the 1,5 meter zone from each other while working with a machine in school. When crossing that line, the signal will make sound/light up/ show a flag/ show an emoticon that will show the people crossing the line that they need to be more aware and step back. This interface will be especially made for using the machines in school.
One of the prototypes in the medical industry.
Persona: Airline Employment

Hard facts
Jane is 34 years old and she lives together with her boyfriend Maarten who is 37 years old. They live in Delft, The Netherlands. Jane studied in Stewardess Receptioniste Hostess at the University of Applied Sciences (TIO) in Rotterdam. She works as a part time flight attendant at KLM since she turned 24 years old. Jane also has a blog on which she keeps up all the places she has seen.

Interests and values
Of course Jane loves to travel. That is also the main reason she wanted to become a flight attendant. She always tries to get the flights to places she loves to go for a longer period of time. If you ask her favourite destination to fly to, she would say anywhere in Asia. She loves to go there, because the culture really speaks to her.
Whenever Jane is in the Netherlands, she and Maarten try to learn new places in their surroundings every weekend. They try new bars, cafe’s, restaurants, etc. It is all about getting to know new areas to get out of their comfort zone.
Another interest of her is instruments. At home she has a lot of instruments, for instance a piano, a guitar, a cello, you name it. And she can play it all!

Computer, Internet and TV Use
Jane owns a MacBook Pro and, iPhone 7 and a Canon camera. She mostly uses her laptop for her work, like saying which flights she would like to work etc. Also she uses her laptop for writing her blog. Her iPhone she takes everywhere, because she always listens to music that is on Spotify. Whenever she goes on a trip again, she takes her camera with her, since she loves to take picture of the things she learns in the new countries she visits. Jane prefers going outside rather than sitting inside and watching TV. She does have a TV, but actually only Maarten really uses it.

A Typical Day
On a day of working, Jane wakes up 4 hours before the time she needs to be at Schiphol Airport. Also when she has to fly in the afternoon or in the evening, she will make sure that she takes a nap. On a normal day, she will wake up at around 8 o’clock.
On a day of working, Jane makes sure that everything is packed the day before flying and of course she also makes sure that her camera is ready. On a normal day, she will write on her blog and edit the photos she has made throughout her trips.
Her lunch differs at home, but mostly she will just eat a simple salad. When flying, she will eat whatever is offered on the plane.
In the afternoon she loves to make some music and her goal is to learn Maarten play the piano. When flying, of course it differs what she will be doing in the afternoon. The flight can be very long which means that she will still be working. Or the flight can be relatively short and maybe she would already be in the hotel at her destination. If she is indeed in another country, she will make sure to get ready and go out to discover the area.
Right before dinner she will FaceTime Maarten if she is in another country then him. He will always pick up, even when the timezones are very different.
For dinner it depends what she will have, because of the habit she has with Maarten. One day it will be a Chinese restaurant, the other day it can be Eastern food. But when eating at home, they mostly eat something simple and most of the time typically Dutch, because she eats so many different kinds of food in other countries.
COVID-19: Now during the “quarantine”, Jane is not very excited about flying with hundreds of people in the same space as her. The first few weeks she just called in sick so that she did not have to fly. But after a while, KLM finds it a bit strange, so they want to call her in for work again. Jane remembered that she could reschedule her vacation from this summer to now, which would help her to not work for another few weeks. Now it looks like her vacation days are almost over so she will soon hear where she has to fly to next. She is very nervous about it.

Future Goals
Jane is thinking about starting a youtube channel to show the world what she gets to see every time when she is working. Her blog is going well, but she just wants to go bigger. Since Jane plays so many instruments, she would also love to try and make her own music. Up until now she has only copied music and learnt herself the notes.
